What a great piece! I did not listen to the talk yet, but will when I have more time. I have yet to read anything by Zadie Smith, but she has been on my list for a while.

Living in Turkey, for even as short a time as I have, I have heard my speech change. I now say things like “close the lights” instead of “turn off the lights”, and “take my money” instead of “get paid”. Having not made a trip home yet, I have no idea the extent to which other parts of my speech may have changed. I guess my friends and family will be the final verdict on that one

I have not really thought about how Obama speaks….but now I will pay more attention to his “we” statements. I have so far enjoyed listening to him as he seems cool, calm, collect and happy. I have never heard of Zadie Smith……….another thought…..I remember living in Honolulu and getting used to the pidgeon English of the locals and after awhile using the same speech.

Zadie Smith is great. My favorites are “On Beauty” and “White Teeth”. Wonderful language and a story that pulls you in.
